The maritime transportation sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily through the use of fossil fuels such as heavy fuel oil and marine diesel oil. These emissions include carbon dioxide, nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides, and particulate matter, which negatively impact the environment and human health. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of alternative fuels in marine engines as a means of reducing pollution. The method used was a literature review of international scientific journals from the past five years. The research findings indicate that alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas, biofuels, methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia have significant potential to reduce emissions. Liquefied natural gas is effective as a temporary solution, while hydrogen and ammonia offer a path to zero emissions in the long term. However, their implementation still faces various technical, cost, and infrastructure challenges.
