This study aims to examine the effect of competence and workload on employee performance, with work engagement acting as a mediating variable. The study was conducted at the Bureau of General Affairs and State Asset Management of the Ministry of Population and Family Development/BKKBN. A quantitative approach was employed using a survey method involving 105 employees. The collected data were analyzed using Structural Equation Modeling–Partial Least Square (SEM-PLS) assisted by SmartPLS 4.0. The results showed that competence has a positive and significant effect on both employee performance and work engagement. Meanwhile, workload has no significant effect on employee performance, but it has a negative and significant effect on work engagement. On the other hand, work engagement is proven to have a positive and significant effect on employee performance. In the mediation test, work engagement does not mediate the relationship between competence and employee performance but mediates the effect of workload on employee performance.
