Abstract

Cataract is one of the leading causes of visual impairment worldwide, characterized by the clouding of the eye lens that obstructs light from entering the eyeball. Cataract is generally associated with degenerative processes due to aging; however, several other risk factors such as exposure to ultraviolet radiation, smoking habits, systemic diseases like diabetes, and occupations that increase exposure to light or heat also play a role in accelerating its onset. This study aims to determine the relationship between age and occupational risk factors with the incidence of cataract at Haji General Hospital Medan in 2024. This research employed an analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all cataract patients at Haji General Hospital Medan during the period of July 1–September 30, 2024, totaling 269 individuals. The sampling technique used was total sampling, in which the entire population was included as research subjects. Data were analyzed using univariate analysis to describe frequency distributions and bivariate analysis with the Chi-Square test to examine the relationship between variables. The results showed that the majority of respondents were female (55%) and worked as private employees, entrepreneurs, or state-owned enterprise workers (45.4%). A total of 198 respondents (73.6%) were diagnosed with cataract. Statistical analysis revealed a significant association between age and the incidence of cataract (p = 0.000 < 0.05) as well as between occupation and the incidence of cataract (p = 0.017 < 0.05). Therefore, it can be concluded that advanced age and certain types of occupations contribute significantly to the increased risk of cataract incidence at Haji General Hospital Medan in 2024.
