Fantasy or Reality: The Impact of Fujoshi/Fudanshi Culture on Gender and Sexuality Perceptions from an Islamic Perspective

Abstract

This study aims to analyze and describe the phenomenon of the existence of Fujoshi and Fundashi, which may impact changes in mindset or perceptions regarding gender and sexuality itself. This discussion remains a subject of debate, as the permissibility of being Fujoshi and Fundashi will be examined from an Islamic perspective. It is library research study, the researcher utilizes three primary sources: books authored by Mark McLelland, Kazumi Nagaike, Katsuhiko Suganuma, and James Welker, as well as books written by Mizuko Ito, Daisuke Okabe, and Izumi Tsuji, both of which discuss Fujoshi/Fundashi in relation to gender and sexuality issues. Additionally, the works of Adis Duderija, Alina Isac Alak, and Kristin Hissong serve as references for exploring Islamic perspectives on the LGBTQ phenomenon. The method of analysis used in this research is content analysis. The study finds that there is indeed a possibility of differing perspectives among Fujoshi/Fundashi regarding gender identity and sexuality itself. Seven gender and sexuality perceptions have been identified from the viewpoints of Fujoshi and Fundashi. From an Islamic standpoint, any matters related to LGBTQ are strictly prohibited, including activities that merely support or consume related content for entertainment purposes. Islam firmly emphasizes that gender and sexual identity are inherently determined by nature (fitrah) and cannot be altered or further developed.
