Exploring Status and Challenges of AI-assisted Integration in Shop Technology Courses: Springboard for Laboratory-based Framework

Abstract

Despite the capability of AI to transform education, its integration into shop technology courses is underexplored. To better understand this issue, a study was conducted at Bataan Peninsula State University's Main Campus using the sequential explanatory mixed-method design, assessing the challenges and extent of AI integration among 39 faculty members teaching industrial technology. Findings of the survey revealed that faculty are aware of AI and have a positive attitude toward using it. However, its integration is moderate only, with assessment and feedback gaining the lowest integration. Challenges include technical and structural issues, including ethical concerns, as the primary risk. The inferential test reveals no significant differences between the extent of usage and challenges against profile, except in the subdiscipline under age and specialization. The interview revealed a digital-physical divide. Findings lead to the conceptualization of the "OLI-SAMPANG" Framework to integrate AI in technical pedagogy.
