Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) has emerged as a strategic educational paradigm to address increasingly complex global challenges, including environmental degradation, cultural homogenization, declining social cohesion, and weakening nationalism among younger generations. While ESD has been widely implemented across many countries, its integration with local wisdom and indigenous cultural values remains fragmented, particularly in developing countries. This article aims to develop a conceptual framework explaining how Education for Sustainable Development contributes to preserving cultural heritage while simultaneously strengthening nationalism, social responsibility, and preference for locally produced goods rooted in local wisdom. This study employs a qualitative literature review methodology. Relevant literature was systematically selected from international peer-reviewed journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science, ERIC, and SpringerLink. The analysis integrates theories of Education for Sustainable Development, Cultural Capital, Social Learning Theory, Ecological Systems Theory, Transformative Learning, Character Education, Place-Based Education, and Cultural Sustainability. Comparative analysis and conceptual synthesis were conducted to identify causal relationships between educational processes, cultural inheritance, character development, and sustainable societal transformation. The study demonstrates that Education for Sustainable Development becomes significantly more transformative when embedded within local wisdom. Such integration strengthens cultural identity, reinforces intergenerational transmission of indigenous knowledge, cultivates nationalism through appreciation of domestic products, promotes responsible citizenship, and enhances social solidarity. The proposed conceptual model emphasizes that sustainable education is not limited to environmental literacy but also functions as a cultural ecosystem fostering resilient communities capable of preserving local identity while engaging constructively with globalization. Future educational policies should therefore prioritize culturally responsive ESD to ensure sustainable development that simultaneously conserves cultural diversity and strengthens national resilience.
