The ideas concerning the teaching of Portuguese and French languages presented by President Prabowo Subianto in his speech have generated a new discourse on the direction of foreign language education policy in Indonesia. This study aims to analyze the discourse construction of the idea of teaching Portuguese and French in President Prabowo Subianto’s speech using Teun A. van Dijk’s Critical Discourse Analysis model and to examine its feasibility within the context of Indonesian education. This study employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. The research data were analyzed based on van Dijk’s three dimensions, namely text structure, social cognition, and social context. The results indicate that the discourse on teaching these two languages is constructed as a strategic instrument for strengthening Indonesia’s international diplomacy and bilateral relations. However, its implementation still faces several challenges, including human resource readiness, operational policies, curriculum development, and institutional support. Therefore, the implementation of this idea requires careful planning and coordination among relevant stakeholders. The success of the proposed foreign language policy ultimately depends on the government’s ability to transform political discourse into educational policies that are well planned, contextually appropriate, and sustainable.
