Abstract

This study examines the challenges and opportunities facing employment in Indonesia in the context of globalization. The study employs a qualitative approach using a descriptive literature review to gain an understanding of employment conditions in Indonesia, changes in the labor market, and the challenges and opportunities arising from globalization and technological development. Data were obtained from various relevant literature sources, including scientific journals, books, government reports, publications by international organizations, and employment-related documents. The findings indicate that Indonesia’s employment sector continues to face several challenges, including high levels of workforce participation in the informal sector, a mismatch between workers’ competencies and labor market demands (skill mismatch), increasing automation, and growing demand for digital skills. At the same time, globalization and technological development have created opportunities through the emergence of new types of employment, expanded access to international labor markets, the growth of the digital economy, and increasing opportunities in sustainable economic sectors, particularly green jobs. The review also indicates that improving the quality of education and training, particularly vocational education, as well as strengthening reskilling and upskilling initiatives, is necessary to enhance the adaptability and competitiveness of Indonesia’s workforce. Therefore, adaptive employment strategies are needed through strengthening human resource quality, improving the relevance of education to industry needs, developing digital skills, and fostering collaboration among the government, educational institutions, and industry. These efforts are essential to transform the challenges posed by globalization into opportunities for increasing the productivity and competitiveness of Indonesia’s workforce.
