Abstract

The Makroman Urban Village Office in Samarinda City serves a strategic role as a center for public services and a space for community interaction at the local level. However, the existing building faces several challenges, including limited space, physical deterioration, and the lack of architectural identity representing East Kalimantan. This community service activity aims to redesign the Makroman Urban Village Office using a neo-vernacular architectural approach that emphasizes Dayak Kenyah cultural values as a form of local identity. The implementation employed a participatory design method involving local government officers, community members, lecturers, and architecture students from Politeknik Negeri Samarinda (POLNES) through three main stages: (1) community needs assessment, (2) conceptual design development, and (3) presentation and submission of the proposed design document. The project resulted in a conceptual design consisting of 2D drawings and 3D visualizations. The proposed building features a linear spatial organization, dual building masses, and integrates local architectural elements such as high gable roofs and Dayak ornaments like hornbill and shield motifs as cultural symbols. The design accommodates the functional needs of public service spaces, improves user circulation, and enhances local identity in the architectural character. The resulting design document is expected to serve as a reference for the government in reconstructing a more representative, inclusive, and culturally embedded public office. This activity demonstrates that participatory design and neo-vernacular architecture can serve as effective strategies for creating functional public facilities while strengthening regional cultural identity
