The rapid integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) in educational environments has introduced both opportunities and challenges for learners and educators. This study aims to critically examine how GenAI influences the development of critical thinking skills among higher education students. Employing a thematic literature review approach, this study synthesized recent empirical evidence from 2024 to 2025. The findings reveal a dual impact: GenAI significantly enhances critical thinking by facilitating rapid access to diverse perspectives, supporting argument construction, and promoting analytical skills. Furthermore, dialogic interactions with educational chatbots foster metacognition and complex conceptual engagement. Conversely, the literature highlights substantial risks, particularly cognitive offloading, where over-reliance on AI diminishes students' motivation for self-reflection and independent judgment. The study concludes that while AI holds transformative potential for cognitive development, its success depends on strategic pedagogical integration. Educators must implement adaptive instructional frameworks that prioritize critical evaluation and ethical AI literacy to safeguard students' intellectual autonomy.
