Writing is a challenging skill for EFL learners, especially in developing ideas, organizing content, and applying appropriate vocabulary and grammar. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of the Four Square Writing Method in improving students’ writing ability in recount texts and to describe classroom conditions during its implementation. This Classroom Action Research (CAR) was conducted based on Burns’ (2009) model through two cycles involving planning, acting, observing, and reflecting stages. The participants were 28 eighth-grade students of SMPN 18 Surakarta. Data were collected through writing tests, classroom observations, interviews, field notes, and documentation, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and Miles and Huberman’s (1994) interactive model. The findings showed that students’ mean scores increased from 63.78 in the pre-test to 68.78 in Post-test I and 77.25 in Post-test II. The method also improved students’ writing aspects and created a more active learning environment.
