<![CDATA[Folklore is not merely a repository of traditional narratives but also a medium through which communities preserve cultural memory, ecological knowledge, social norms, and place-based meanings. This study examines four folktales from Sirampog Subdistrict, Brebes Regency—Mitos Alur Jahat, Legenda Gunung Wayang, Asal-Usul Curug Putri, and Mata Air Kali Sura—to explain how narrative structure, text, co-text, and cultural context operate as a local knowledge transmission system and to identify their pedagogical implications for literature learning in junior high school. The study employed a descriptive qualitative design with structuralist and anthropolinguistic approaches. Data were obtained through observation, interviews, documentation, and literature study, and were analyzed in four stages: structural identification, text–co-text–context interpretation, cross-case thematic synthesis, and pedagogical alignment with Grade VII Indonesian language learning. The findings show that the four folktales transmit local knowledge through four interrelated functions: place-based cultural memory, ecological ethics, social-linguistic regulation, and intergenerational cultural continuity. Natural sites such as forests, mountains, waterfalls, and springs are narrated not only as settings but also as culturally meaningful spaces that organize community memory and behavioral norms. Oral transmission through families and community actors sustains these meanings across generations. Pedagogically, the folktales can support narrative analysis, cultural literacy, vocabulary development, contextual interpretation, and the production of locally grounded narratives. The study contributes an integrative view of folklore as a living knowledge system and proposes that literature learning move beyond identifying intrinsic elements toward interpreting the relationship among language, place, cultural memory, and community knowledge.]]>
