A learning approach capable of enhancing student engagement and learning outcomes is essential in Islamic Religious Education (PAI). However, studies on the application of the pumping student approach to the PAI learning outcomes of tenth-grade students at SMA Negeri 1 Koto Balingka remain limited. This study aimed to analyze the effect of the pumping student approach on students’ PAI learning outcomes. The study employed a quantitative approach with a quasi-experimental nonequivalent group design. The sample comprised 62 students selected using cluster sampling, including 31 students from Class X E3 as the experimental group and 31 students from Class X E2 as the control group. Data were collected through learning achievement tests administered as a pretest and posttest. The instrument was tested for validity and reliability and yielded a Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of .740. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, normality and homogeneity tests, and a paired-samples t test with the assistance of SPSS version 27. The results showed that the experimental group’s mean learning outcome score increased from 65.32 to 84.19, whereas the control group’s mean score increased from 65.16 to 75.81. The hypothesis test yielded a value of p < .001, which was lower than .05. Thus, the pumping student approach had a significant effect on students’ PAI learning outcomes. These findings provide empirical evidence of the potential of the pumping student approach as an instructional alternative for improving PAI learning outcomes. Future research is recommended to involve more diverse samples, learning materials, and variables to provide a more comprehensive understanding of the effectiveness of this approach.
