Abstract

Flooding caused by the overflow of the Cibeet River is one of the primary factors contributing to prolonged inundation in residential areas of Cipayung Village, Bekasi Regency. This community service program aimed to implement infiltration wells as a vertical drainage system to support flood mitigation and groundwater conservation through hydrological and geotechnical analyses. The implementation methods included field surveys, site condition assessment, hydrological analysis, infiltration well design, community education, construction using the Project-Based Learning (PBL) approach, and six-month post-implementation monitoring. Site analysis identified five priority locations that frequently experienced inundation due to upstream flooding. Hydrological analysis was conducted by evaluating design rainfall, rainfall intensity, catchment area, runoff coefficient, and estimated runoff discharge to determine the required storage capacity. Furthermore, soil conditions, land availability, material selection, and constructability were analyzed to optimize the infiltration well design. The selected design consisted of infiltration wells with a 0.90 m diameter, 2.20 m depth, a 0.22 m gravel infiltration layer, and a concrete cover. A total of five infiltration wells were successfully constructed with the participation of 19 students, local government officials, and community members. Six-month monitoring indicated that all infiltration wells remained structurally sound and continued to function effectively as infiltration facilities. However, their effectiveness in reducing surface inundation was limited due to the collapse of the Cibeet River embankment, which significantly increased upstream flood discharge into the residential area. Nevertheless, the infiltration wells contributed to enhancing groundwater recharge, improving local stormwater management, and increasing community awareness of sustainable water resource management.
