Abstract

Egg yield from Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) drops noticeably when cage conditions drift outside narrow comfort zones, an outcome that becomes acute when Indonesia enters the pancaroba transition between dry and rainy seasons. Most village-scale operators still rely on visual inspection alone and therefore intervene only after losses have appeared. To address this gap, the present work assembled and field-tested an Internet-of-Things (IoT) cage instrument paired with a React Native handheld interface. The hardware tier uses an ESP32 controller bound to four sensors—DHT22 for air temperature and relative humidity, MQ-137 for ammonia, BH1750 for illuminance, and DS3231 for time synchronization—mounted directly above the birds and pushing readings to a Spring Boot service at half-hour intervals. Stress was aggregated into a single Environmental Stress Index (ESI), computed as 0.45 × S_THI plus 0.35 × S_NH3 plus 0.20 × S_light, with each component clipped to the [0,1] interval. Field measurement covered one production house holding roughly 1,800 layer hens in Siwatu village (Batang Regency, Central Java) across 30 successive days of pancaroba conditions. Throughout the trial, the index never dipped into the Good band; 25 days (83.3%) fell into Needs Attention and 5 (16.7%) reached Critical. Pearson correlation linking daily ESI to daily egg output yielded r = -0.361 with p = 0.050 (n = 30), establishing a statistically significant inverse relationship. At parameter level, air temperature alone correlated most strongly (r = -0.418, p = 0.022), followed by THI (r = -0.386, p = 0.035). The five-tab mobile client (Dashboard, Kandang, Komunitas, Medis, Akun) surfaced the index in real time and offered cage administration as well as a discussion board for farmer peer support.
