Abstract

Recurring ground subsidence around the Cikapayang River channel, particularly in the vicinity of the Bandung City Groundwater and Environmental Geology Center (PATGTL), has become a significant geotechnical issue. These incidents are believed to be triggered by poorly compacted fill layers, which allow intense infiltration of rainwater into the soil pores. This increase in pore water content causes a significant increase in the unit weight of the soil. It imposes additional loads on the underlying layers, which ultimately increases the risk of land subsidence. This study aims to identify the occurrence of renewed subsidence around the current subsidence zone using the 2D electrical resistivity method with the Wenner-Schlumberger configuration. Measurements were conducted along five transects, each 52 meters long, with a 1-meter electrode spacing. The data were processed using Res2dinv; subsequently, all transects were merged and visualized using Leapfrog Geo, and synthetic modeling was performed via Res2dmod to verify the results. The results of the study showed resistivity values ranging from 4.86 to 339 Ωm. Low resistivity values (4–30 Ωm) were interpreted as water-saturated clay fill layers, whereas high resistivity values (>101 Ωm) indicated the presence of voids and subsurface water-channel structures. Subsidence zones were identified in four sections in the central area, while a potential new subsidence zone at a depth of 1 meter was detected in the outermost section. This study demonstrates that the 2D electrical resistivity method is effective for detecting areas prone to subsidence and can serve as a basis for mitigation and infrastructure planning in urban areas at risk of subsidence.
