This study explores the role of parents in the maintenance of the Buginese language within the family, addressing the urgent issue of language shift and the decline of ethnic languages in Indonesia. In light with these issues, it aims to understand the parental attitudes and decisions influence Heritage Language Maintenance (HLM) and the logical reasons why families are crucial agents in preserving the Buginese language. Using a, descriptive qualitative approach, this study involved semi-structured interviews with Buginese parents employing thematic analysis. The thematic analysis revealed that parents view the Buginese language as both a cultural heritage and a key element of identity. However, while parents strongly believe in the importance of preserving the language, the actual maintenance practices are often informal, relying on daily conversations rather than structured educational approaches. The findings highlight a gap between ideological commitment and practical language management, suggesting that more structured strategies, including educational support and community involvement, are necessary for effective language preservation. This study underscores the vital role of families in sustaining linguistic and cultural heritage, offering valuable insights for future language maintenance initiatives.
