Low literacy interest and ability among early childhood populations in rural areas remain a challenge that needs to be addressed through community-based literacy programs. This community service activity aims to describe the implementation of the Lapak Baca (Reading Stall) program in Lendang Penyonggok and Otak Bangket hamlets, Tetebatu Selatan Village, East Lombok, and to identify its supporting and inhibiting factors. The program partners were children ranging from kindergarten to elementary school age in both hamlets. The service method employed a qualitative descriptive approach through participatory observation and documentation, with activities divided into two tracks according to participants’ reading ability: letter recognition for non-readers, and shared reading followed by retelling for those who could already read. The results showed that four to eight children in the beginner group demonstrated progress in letter recognition and spelling, while the quality of retelling among the advanced group varied according to each child’s level of self-confidence. The main challenge identified was unstable attendance due to overlapping schedules with other hamlet activities, while limited documentation in Lendang Penyonggok constitutes an important methodological note. This program demonstrates that a literacy approach based on ability, rather than age alone, can serve as a relevant model for replication in other rural communities with similarly limited literacy access.
