Abstract

Abstract This study was conducted in response to the increasing phenomenon of fatherlessness caused by the emotional absence of fathers and its potential impact on the fulfillment of basic psychological needs among early adult women. The study aimed to explore the dynamics of self-determination in women who experienced fatherless conditions during their development. A qualitative method with a phenomenological approach was employed to gain an in-depth understanding of participants’ lived experiences. The study involved five female participants aged 21–22 years. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews and analyzed using thematic analysis. The findings indicate an imbalance in the fulfillment of basic psychological needs. Participants showed relational vulnerability, difficulties in forming secure emotional connections, and fluctuating self-efficacy. However, they also demonstrated relatively strong autonomy reflected in independence, self-reliance, and personal responsibility in managing life challenges. These findings suggest that fatherless experiences not only contribute to interpersonal vulnerability but also encourage the development of autonomy as an adaptive coping mechanism. The study emphasizes the importance of balanced psychological need fulfillment and highlights the need for counseling interventions that support secure relationships, strengthen self-efficacy, and promote adaptive autonomy among individuals with fatherless experiences.
