Abstract

Indonesia's intensifying tourism competition increasingly compels nature-based destinations to build a strong image rather than rely on natural scenery alone, and event activation has become a widely used strategy for doing so. Kebun Raya Bogor, one of the oldest and most complete botanical gardens in Southeast Asia, has actively organized event programs, yet their effect on destination image has rarely been examined empirically. This study measured visitor evaluations of event activation, characterized the destination image formed, and estimated the magnitude of the former's effect on the latter. A cross-sectional online survey of 104 visitors who attended events between January and May 2026 was analyzed using descriptive statistics and multiple linear regression. Event activation was operationalized through Carneiro et al.'s (2019) eventscape dimensions of facilities, design, and entertainment, and destination image through Huete-Alcocer et al.'s (2019) cognitive, affective, and unique dimensions. Both constructs were evaluated highly, and event activation had a positive, significant effect on destination image, both partially and simultaneously, explaining 75.4% of its variance (R² = 0.754). The results reveal a complementary structure: entertainment produced the largest absolute effect (B = 1.542) while facilities carried the largest standardized contribution (? = 0.439), indicating that adequate facilities form the foundation on which entertainment-driven image gains are built. The findings extend eventscape and destination-image theory to a nature-based conservation setting and suggest that management prioritize entertainment programming without compromising baseline facility quality.
