Abstract

The development of visual-based social media technology has triggered the massive use of Augmented Reality (AR) facial filters among adolescents. This visual editing behavior has the potential to influence an individual's perception of their physical appearance (body image). Objective: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between the use of facial filters on electronic social media and body image among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Sukahaji in 2026. Methods: This research employed a quantitative observational design with a cross-sectional approach. The population comprised all eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Sukahaji, with a sample size of 185 respondents selected using stratified random sampling. Data were collected using a structured facial filter usage questionnaire and the Multidimensional Body-Self Relations Questionnaire-Appearance Scales (MBSRQ-AS), both validated and tested for reliability. Bivariate data analysis was performed using Fisher’s Exact Test. Ethical clearance was approved under No: 006519/Universitas YPIB Majalengka. Results: Distribution of facial filter usage revealed low category among 23 respondents (12.4%), moderate category among 89 respondents (48.1%), and high category among 73 respondents (39.5%). Body image findings indicated that the majority of respondents possessed a positive body image (175 respondents, 94.6%), while 10 respondents (5.4%) exhibited a negative body image. Statistical analysis using Fisher’s Exact Test yielded a p-value of 0.043 (p < 0.05). Conclusion: There is a significant relationship between the use of facial filters on electronic social media and body image among eleventh-grade students at SMAN 1 Sukahaji in 2026. School health nursing personnel are encouraged to optimize digital literacy educational programs and body positivity reinforcement.
