Developing 21st-century competencies particularly an innovative mindset is crucial for Vocational High School (SMK) students to navigate the dynamic challenges of the manufacturing industry. Conventional instruction in machining workshops often prioritizes technical skills (hard skills) while neglecting the cultivation of creative problem-solving abilities. This study aims to analyze the impact of implementing product prototyping practices using a Design Thinking approach on enhancing the innovative mindset of 11th-grade students specializing in Machining Engineering. A descriptive quantitative research method was employed, featuring the implementation of design thinking-based product prototyping practices as the independent variable (X) and the enhancement of an innovative mindset as the dependent variable (Y). Data regarding the improvement of the innovative mindset were collected via a questionnaire consisting of closed-ended questions and statements, requiring students to select from pre-determined response options. The results indicate that design thinking-based prototyping practices enable students to enhance their innovative mindset. This outcome is attributed to the design thinking process, which trains students to understand problems, identify and analyze needs, discover optimal solutions, create products based on discussed solutions, and test those products with the individuals experiencing the problems.
