The maleo bird (Macrocephalon maleo) is a species endemic to Sulawesi that is threatened with extinction due to habitat destruction and natural predation pressure. The Hungayono area within Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park serves as a crucial nesting habitat for the maleo, yet current population data remain limited. This study aimed to monitor the maleo population and analyze the factors influencing it in the Hungayono area. Research was conducted over days between August and September , employing both direct (visual) and indirect (vocalizations and tracks) observation methods using the concentration count technique across two habitat types: nesting grounds and roosting sites. Data were analyzed using descriptive quantitative methods to calculate population density and estimate the total number of individuals. The study identified 84 pairs of maleo birds ( individuals) engaged in nesting activities, with a peak population density of individuals/ha. Observed natural predators included monitor lizards (Varanus salvator) and spotted doves (Spilopelia chinensis), with frequencies of and individuals, respectively. Key factors influencing the population included the availability of nesting habitat, predation pressure, climatic disturbances, and vegetation conditions. Even though the threat posed by predators is quite significant. The study concludes that the Hungayono area remains a vital reproductive habitat; however, predator management and continuous monitoring are essential to ensure the long-term survival of the maleo population.
