This community service project aims to apply the Engineering Design Process (EDP) to improve the problem-solving skills of 12th-grade students at Teluk Bintan State High School 1 through the design of the “Cheerful Trash Bin.” The project was conducted using a descriptive method and a participatory approach, involving several stages: presentation of material, observation, problem identification, solution development, design, and presentation. Observations revealed that litter is still being disposed of improperly despite the availability of trash bins, indicating the need for a more engaging and educational solution. To address this issue, students designed the “Cheerful Trash Bin,” a smart trash bin equipped with an ultrasonic sensor, microcontroller, solar panel, speaker, and backup battery. The system delivers words of encouragement to motivate students and promote positive waste-disposal behavior. The application of the Engineering Design Process (EDP) helped students improve their abilities to identify problems, develop ideas, collaborate with peers, design solutions, and present their work systematically. The resulting product has the potential to encourage proper waste disposal habits and support a school environment, although further development and testing are still required.
