Abstract

Household food security is increasingly vulnerable to volatile chili prices, while many residential yards remain underused as a potential food source. In response, students from Kuliah Kerja Mahasiswa (KKM) Group 02, Universitas Bina Bangsa, carried out a community service program at Graha Dalung Residence, Kelurahan Dalung, Kecamatan Cipocok Jaya, Kota Serang, combining chili seed cultivation with the planting of zodia (Evodia suaveolens), a shrub long valued for repelling mosquitoes naturally. Held on Juli 15th to 22nd August 2026, the program unfolded across five linked stages — registering participants, delivering a short briefing on food security, mixing soil and compost into polybag planting media, guiding hands-on seed sowing, and explaining follow-up care such as watering, fertilizing, and simple pest control — before each household took home a chili seedling to tend independently. Housewives from the residence worked alongside neighbourhood administrators and KKM students throughout, with food-security concepts introduced informally via question-and-answer exchanges woven into the planting process itself. The outcome was strong participant engagement from start to finish: attendees left with hands-on planting skills, a sharper sense of how yard space can supply food independently, and, thanks to the zodia seedlings, an eco-friendly option for keeping mosquitoes at bay. Overall, pairing direct cultivation practice with situated, interactive learning proved a workable route toward household-level food resilience and a healthier living environment, suggesting the model is worth repeating and extending to other productive crops.
