Abstract

Agricultural activities generate substantial quantities of organic waste, including crop residues, fruit and vegetable wastes, animal manure, agro-industrial by-products, and food-processing wastes. Improper disposal contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, unpleasant odors, soil degradation, and water contamination, highlighting the need for sustainable waste management. This review examines bioconversion as a strategy for transforming agricultural waste into economically valuable products through microorganisms, enzymes, and biological processes. It considers the available waste streams, microorganisms involved, and major conversion processes, alongside their environmental, economic, and agricultural benefits and the challenges limiting large-scale application. The synthesis highlights the potential of bioconversion to produce biofuels, biogas, biofertilizers, organic acids, industrial enzymes, single-cell proteins, animal feed, biodegradable plastics, and other value-added products. Advances in biotechnology, genetic engineering, and industrial microbiology are discussed as means of improving conversion efficiency. The review concludes that bioconversion offers a promising approach to agricultural waste management by linking waste reduction with renewable energy production, resource recovery, and economic value creation. It supports the adoption of modern bioconversion technologies to advance sustainable agriculture and circular bioeconomy development while recognizing the need to address barriers to large-scale implementation.
