Abstract

Artificial intelligence is increasingly shifting from an external computational tool to an everyday cognitive, creative, relational, and decision-making infrastructure. This transition creates a paradox: technologies that reduce effort, uncertainty, delay, and friction can enhance productivity and accessibility, while the same friction may contribute to the development and preservation of human capabilities. This qualitative literature review synthesizes contemporary research published during 2020–2026 across artificial intelligence ethics, psychology, cognitive science, education, human–computer interaction, consumer research, neuroscience, and communication. It examines six interconnected domains: autonomy and judgment, cognition and memory, creativity and authorship, social connection, embodiment and navigation, and attention and intentional disconnection. The synthesis develops the Productive Friction–Human Capability Preservation (PF-HCP) Framework, distinguishing beneficial technological offloading from substitution that may reduce meaningful capability exercise. Evidence suggests that AI can augment creativity, learning, decision making, and emotional support, but outcomes depend on task design, human involvement, literacy, and opportunities for reflection, verification, exploration, reciprocity, and independent judgment. Rather than advocating technological withdrawal, the review proposes selective delegation: automate unnecessary burdens while preserving human participation where effort contributes to agency, expertise, relationships, creativity, and flourishing. Implications are discussed for individuals, education, organizations, AI design, services, and public policy.
