Problem Based Learning (PBL) is relevant to mathematical literacy because it encourages students to apply mathematical concepts to solve real-world problems. Considering that PBL facilitates mathematical application in solving real-world problems, this study aimed to analyze its effect on students’ mathematical literacy skills. This study used a quasi-experimental design with two-way ANOVA. The population comprised all seventh-grade students at Kroya 1 State Junior High School. Samples were selected using stratified cluster random sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and tests and analyzed using ANOVA. Problem-solving-oriented PBL outperformed direct instruction in improving students’ mathematical literacy skills. Students with problem-solving beliefs demonstrated higher mathematical literacy than instrumentalist and platonic beliefs.
