Banana peel (Musa spp.) is an agricultural waste material with potential as a natural active ingredient due to its bioactive compounds, particularly phenolic and flavonoid compounds associated with antioxidant activity. The utilization of banana peel in cosmetics represents an approach to increase the value of biomass waste through the development of natural-based products. This article aims to review the potential of banana peel extract as an active ingredient in peel-off gel mask formulations based on previous scientific studies. A narrative literature review method was conducted by analyzing scientific publications related to the phytochemical composition of banana peel, biological activities, characteristics of peel-off gel mask formulations, and their potential applications in cosmetics. The findings indicate that banana peel extract contains bioactive compounds with potential antioxidant properties that may support skin protection against oxidative stress. Previous studies also demonstrate that peel-off gel masks can serve as a suitable delivery system for natural active ingredients through evaluations of physical characteristics, stability, and biological activity. This review highlights the potential of banana peel extract as a natural cosmetic ingredient while emphasizing the need for further studies regarding extract standardization, formulation optimization, safety assessment, and biological effectiveness.
