This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of cognitive behavioral counseling using cognitive restructuring and self-management techniques in reducing gaming addiction among Guidance and Counseling students at Universitas Negeri Malang, cohort 2022. A quantitative pre-experimental approach with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design was used. Four students with moderate to high levels of gaming addiction were selected through purposive sampling. Data were collected using an Indonesian version of the Game Addiction Scale (GAS) and structured interviews. The intervention was delivered in six counseling sessions combining cognitive restructuring and self-management techniques. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and effect size. The mean gaming addiction score decreased from 27.25 in the pretest, categorized as high, to 15.00 in the posttest, categorized as low. The one-tailed exact significance was 0.043 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant reduction in gaming addiction after the intervention. The effect size was 0.92, indicating a very large practical effect. These findings suggest that integrating cognitive restructuring and self-management within cognitive behavioral counseling can be an effective alternative for reducing gaming addiction among university students.
