Abstract Understanding geometric concepts is one of the important abilities in elementary school mathematics learning. However, third-grade students at SD 3 Buwaran still experience difficulties in understanding geometric concepts due to learning processes that are still dominated by conventional methods and limited use of learning media. This study aims to determine the improvement of students’ mathematical concept understanding through the use of Geonun Troso media based on Project Based Learning with an ethnomathematical approach. This research employed a quantitative method with a One Group Pretest-Posttest Design involving 24 third-grade students at SD 3 Buwaran. The data were analyzed using normality tests, Paired Sample T-Test, and N-Gain analysis. The results showed an increase in students’ average scores from 59.17 in the pretest to 82.71 in the posttest, with an improvement of 23.54 points. The Paired Sample T-Test result showed a significance value of 0.000 < 0.05, indicating a significant difference between the pretest and posttest results. Furthermore, the N-Gain test obtained an average score of 0.62, categorized as moderate, with an improvement percentage of 62.64%. Based on these results, it can be concluded that Geonun Troso media based on Project Based Learning is effective in improving students’ understanding of geometric concepts through learning that is more contextual, active and meaningful.
