Abstract

General Background: Diabetes mellitus can be associated with disturbances in kidney function, reflected by changes in serum creatinine and urea levels. Specific Background: Red ginger (Zingiber officinale var. rubrum) and coriander seeds (Coriandrum sativum L.) contain bioactive compounds with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and have been investigated in diabetic experimental models. Knowledge Gap: Further investigation is needed regarding the changes in serum creatinine and urea following administration of red ginger and coriander seed extracts, particularly their combined administration in alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Aims: This study aimed to determine the changes in creatinine and serum urea levels following administration of red ginger extract, coriander seed extract, and their combination in alloxan-induced diabetic male rats. Results: Male Rattus norvegicus rats were induced with alloxan and treated with red ginger extract, coriander seed extract, or a 1:1 combination for 14 days. Serum creatinine and urea were examined before and after treatment. The analysis showed significant differences in creatinine and serum urea levels, with p = 0.000 for both parameters. The combination group showed the greatest reduction in serum urea among the treatment groups. Novelty: The study examines red ginger and coriander seed extracts, including their combined administration, in relation to serum creatinine and urea in an alloxan-induced diabetic rat model. Implications: Red ginger and coriander seed extracts have potential as natural materials for reducing serum creatinine and urea associated with impaired kidney function under diabetic conditions. Key Findings Highlights Serum creatinine decreased across all groups after administration of the extracts, although the values remained above the reported normal range. Coriander seed treatment showed a significant difference in serum creatinine among the treatment groups. The combined red ginger and coriander seed treatment produced the greatest reduction in serum urea among the treatment groups. Keywords : Red Ginger, Coriander Seeds, Serum Creatinine, Serum Urea, Alloxan-Induced Diabetes
