Animation is an effective visual medium for conveying messages and social values, including friendship. However, most animation studies focus on narrative meaning, while research on character creation as the main message carrier remains limited. This study examines the preproduction stage in the creation of the 2D animation “The Tale of Friendship”, with an emphasis on character design. A creation-based method using the animation pipeline is applied, focusing on preproduction. The process includes concept development, scriptwriting, storyboarding, character design, and lip sync creation. Evaluation is conducted through alpha testing. The results show that well-developed character design in pre-production can effectively represent the values of friendship.
