Abstract

The East Indonesia University General Tourism Hospital (RSUW UIT) is a private hospital that adopts the hospital hospitality concept by integrating healthcare services with patient comfort. Nevertheless, the quality of the work environment, particularly lighting, remains a crucial aspect in supporting Occupational Health and Safety (OHS). This study aimed to evaluate the compliance of lighting intensity and room temperature in various hospital areas with the standards established by the Indonesian Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Manpower. Measurements were conducted using a lux meter to assess lighting intensity and a digital thermo-hygrometer to measure temperature and relative humidity in service areas, inpatient wards, laboratories, corridors, and supporting facilities. The findings revealed that most hospital areas did not meet the required lighting standards. Laboratories, the Emergency Department (ED), NICU/PICU, radiology, pharmacy, inpatient wards, cardiac care units, and meeting rooms exhibited lighting levels below the recommended standards, while only the lobby and part of the maternity ward complied with the requirements. Overall, more than 80% of the assessed areas had inadequate lighting, potentially increasing visual fatigue, reducing work accuracy, elevating the risk of medical errors, and diminishing the comfort of both patients and healthcare workers. Therefore, improvements are recommended through the installation of standard-compliant LED lighting, optimization of lighting layouts, routine maintenance, and periodic environmental audits as part of the hospital's Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS).
