Abstract

Stress is an uncomfortable feeling that causes physical and mental strain, making non-pharmacological therapies such as aromatherapy necessary as a safer complementary treatment. Ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil is known to contain aromatic compounds such as linalool, which have the potential to produce a relaxing effect. This study aims to determine the effect of varying concentrations of ylang-ylang essential oil (Cananga odorata) 2%, 3%, and 4% on the physical properties of aromatherapy candles and their effectiveness in reducing stress in mice. This study employed a laboratory experimental method with a post-test only control group design involving 25 mice divided into five treatment groups. The physical properties of the aromatherapy candles were assessed using organoleptic parameters, burn time, and melting point, while the anti-stress efficacy was evaluated using the Tail Suspension Test (TST) based on immobility time. The results showed that increasing the concentration of ylang-ylang (Cananga odorata) essential oil affected the physical properties of the aromatherapy candles, characterized by increased aroma intensity, a lower melting point, and changes in burn time. Additionally, variations in essential oil concentration also influenced the anti-stress efficacy in mice. Formulation F3 (4%) showed the best efficacy among the treatment groups (F1, F2, and F3), with an immobility time of 85 ± 19.13, although it did not exceed the positive control value of 76.8 ± 28.64.
