Abstract

Introduction: Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and is on the rise worldwide. Individuals with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) are at high risk of developing AD and experiencing cognitive impairment. Current pharmacological therapies remain limited in preventing disease progression. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) is a non-pharmacological intervention with the potential to prevent the progression of MCI to AD. Methods: This study uses a narrative review method by accessing relevant articles through electronic databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar, focusing on publications from 2016 to 2026. The authors applied inclusion and exclusion criteria to select the articles. Results: TMS has been shown to improve overall cognitive function, memory, and executive function in individuals with MCI and those at risk for AD. Discuss: TMS improves neuroplasticity and functional brain connectivity by modulating cortical activity and increasing the expression of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), which may slow the progression of neurodegenerative processes. Conclusion: TMS has the potential to serve as a nonpharmacological intervention that can delay cognitive decline and the progression from MCI to Alzheimer’s disease.
