Abstract

Environmental issues remain insufficiently integrated into history education, which often emphasizes textual and chronological knowledge rather than connecting historical learning with ecological awareness and local wisdom. This study aims to explore the form of student eco-literacy through direct involvement in the Sedekah Laut radition in Cilacap, Central Java, as a medium for environmental history learning. The study uses a participatory qualitative method by involving History Education students from Galuh University in observation, documentation, and reflection in Ujungalang Village, Kampung Laut District. Data were collected through participatory observation, interviews, reflective notes, and visual documentation, and were then analyzed thematically using Nvivo 12 Plus software. The results showed that student involvement in the Sedekah Laut tradition increased ecological awareness, understanding of local history, and appreciation of coastal cultural values. This experience-based learning process fostered three dimensions of eco-literacy: cognitive (understanding of human-nature relations), affective (ecological empathy), and conative (concrete conservation actions). Therefore, the Sedekah Laut tradition has the potential to function as a living classroom that integrates ecological, historical, and cultural dimensions of learning. The students’ direct engagement with the tradition provides opportunities to connect environmental knowledge with local historical and cultural experiences. This research produced a conceptual design for a Transdisciplinary Eco-Historical Learning Model, an approach to environmental history learning grounded in local wisdom. This research adds an ecological dimension to historical thinking and offers a contextual and culture-based model of sustainable education.
