Objective: This study aimed to examine the effectiveness of AI-powered digital comic videos as interactive media in improving students’ listening comprehension in Indonesian language education. The study addressed limitations in traditional listening instruction by integrating multimodal learning media that combined visual narratives and audio elements. Method: The study employed a mixed-methods approach using a quasi-experimental pre-test and post-test design. The participants consisted of 60 junior high school students who participated in listening activities through AI-generated digital comic videos. Quantitative data were collected from listening comprehension tests administered before and after the intervention, while qualitative data were obtained through focus group discussions and teacher interviews to explore students’ learning experiences and engagement. Results: The findings showed a significant improvement in students’ listening comprehension scores after the implementation of the AI-powered digital comic videos. Students demonstrated a better understanding of tone, context, and narrative meaning, with a large effect size (Cohen’s d = 0.85). Qualitative results also indicated increased student engagement, improved vocabulary acquisition, and stronger comprehension supported by visual cues and culturally relevant storylines. Novelty: This study highlighted the transition from static digital comics to AI-powered interactive video narratives as an innovative learning medium in Indonesian language education. The transformation of passive visual reading materials into dynamic multimodal experiences created an interactive listening environment that enhanced comprehension, engagement, and contextual understanding, offering a new approach for developing listening skills in language learning.
