Abstract

The wage practice for coffee drying workers represents a form of employment relationship commonly found in rural communities. In Tanjung Beringin Village, coffee drying workers receive a daily wage of IDR 100,000 based on the duration of the drying process. This study aims to examine the wage determination practices for coffee drying workers and analyze them from the perspective of Sharia Economic Law. This study employs a field research method with a descriptive qualitative approach. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation, and subsequently analyzed based on the concept of the ijarah ‘ala al-‘amal (lease of services) contract, as well as the principles of justice, trustworthiness (amanah), honesty, transparency, and public interest (maslahah). The findings indicate that a time-based wage of IDR 100,000 per day is fundamentally permissible under an ijarah contract, provided that the wage amount, the scope of work, and the payment terms are clearly known and mutually agreed upon by both parties. However, the study found that some workers intentionally slow down the drying process by failing to re-spread or by covering the coffee beans even when weather conditions remain favorable for drying. Consequently, the drying process, which should normally be completed in approximately two weeks, can extend up to three weeks, incurring an additional wage cost of around IDR 700,000 for the coffee owner. Intentionally prolonging working hours to secure additional wages contradicts the principles of trustworthiness, honesty, justice, and public interest in Sharia Economic Law. Thus, while the wage contract is fundamentally valid, the intentional prolongation of work violates the worker's obligation to execute the job according to the mutual agreement.
