Islamic boarding schools (pesantren) face demands for educational change and the evolution of modernity, even as the continuity of traditions and Islamic values remains a vital component of their institutional identity. This study aims to analyze the process of negotiating tradition and modernity within the educational operations of the Al-Kaaffah Islamic Boarding School in Kuningan. Employing a qualitative approach with a single-case study design, the research gathered data through in-depth interviews, observations, and document analysis. The data were analyzed thematically through processes of coding, categorization, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal that the negotiation between tradition and modernity unfolds through three primary processes: upholding core traditional values, selectively adopting modern elements based on their utility and alignment with values, and adapting their implementation to meet educational needs and the students' circumstances. These three processes operate in an integrated manner, allowing tradition and modernity to coexist within the educational framework without compromising the school's pesantren identity. The study concludes that the modernization of Al-Kaaffah is selective, adaptive, and contextual, with tradition serving as the normative foundation for responding to educational changes.
