This study aims to examine the effect of workload on employee performance, both directly and indirectly through competence as a mediating variable, at the Department of Food Crops, Horticulture, and Plantations of South Sulawesi Province. This study employed a quantitative approach with a survey design. Data were collected from 82 Civil Servants (ASN) selected from a population of 460 ASN using simple random sampling. Data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS. The results show that workload has a positive and significant effect on employee performance (β = 0.752; t = 8.265; p < 0.001) and on competence (β = 0.939; t = 79.613; p < 0.001). Competence also has a positive and significant effect on employee performance (β = 0.220; t = 2.311; p = 0.010). The indirect effect of workload on employee performance through competence is positive and significant (β = 0.206; t = 2.305; p = 0.011), with a VAF of 21.50%, indicating partial mediation. The findings suggest that workload management and competence development need to be considered together in supporting employee performance in public organizations.
