Abstract

Retail cigarette sales can make it easier for adolescents to obtain cigarettes because they do not have to purchase an entire pack. This study aims to analyze the relationship between knowledge, attitudes, peer influence, and accessibility and the purchase of cigarettes by the pack at high school students in Kota Baru Subdistrict, Jambi City. A quantitative study with a cross-sectional design was conducted from January to September 2026 at SMAN 4, SMAN 6, and SMAN 8 in Jambi City. The sample consisted of 97 students selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through structured interviews using a questionnaire. Bivariate analysis was performed using the chi-square test with a significance level of α = 0.05. The results showed that 59 respondents (60.8%) fell into the low category of retail cigarette purchases, while 38 respondents (39.2%) fell into the high category. Respondents with good knowledge were mostly in the low purchase category (75.0%), while those with poor knowledge were mostly in the high purchase category (72.4%). Positive attitudes were more common among those in the low purchase category (75.0%), whereas negative attitudes were more common among those in the high purchase category (80.0%). Positive peer influence was more common among high-purchase respondents (85.3%), while negative peer influence was more common among low-purchase respondents (85.7%). Positive accessibility was more common among low-purchase respondents (83.9%), while negative accessibility was more common among high-purchase respondents (80.0%). All variables showed a significant association with the purchase of cigarettes by the pack (p=0.001). Knowledge, attitudes, peer influence, and accessibility were significantly associated with the purchase of cigarettes by the pack among the high school students in this study. These findings highlight the need to strengthen health education, foster a peer environment that supports healthy behaviors, and regulate access to the sale of cigarettes by the pack.
