Nowadays, many women wear hijab, but wear tight, transparent clothes, and behave in ways that are not in accordance with the sharia. This article aims to reveal the meaning of women's awrah contained in QS. al-Nūr [24]: 31 with one of the contemporary interpretations with hermeneutic and contextual nuances, namely the ma'nā-cum-maghzā approach initiated by Sahiron Syamsuddin. Ma'nā-cum-maghzā is an approach that focuses on two things, namely the main historical meaning/message (ma'nā) and historical significance (maghzā), which is then developed into the context of the present. After following the systematic steps of the ma'nā-cum-maghzā approach and applying it to QS. al-Nūr [24]: 31, it was found that the aurat of a woman is not only visible by birth. However, behavior and politeness are also very important to maintain. Covering the awrah not only covers the body with loose and non-tight clothes, but also means covering and guarding oneself from everything that lowers one's self-esteem and eliminates shame.
