This study describes and compares the semantic content of the novels Kelana Cinta Shafiyya and Layla Majnun using a library‑research approach. In Kelana Cinta Shafiyya, analysis of its literary elements revealed themes of social empathy, as illustrated by Shafiyyah’s concern for both humans and non‑human creatures; deep affection, embodied in the compassionate portrayal of Bunda Shafiyyah; and the value of friendship, evidenced by dialogues depicting the bond between two girls. In Layla Majnun, the researcher identified expressions of hope in Layla’s reflections on her beloved; profound sadness experienced by both Layla and Majnun when their emotional trials intensify; and pervasive disappointment, manifested in Layla’s descent into daily sorrow and depression. These findings illuminate how each novel employs distinct affective meanings to engage readers and convey its core messages.
