The family is the first and foremost institution in human life, playing a vital role in shaping one’s personality, morals, and spirituality. In Islam, the ideal family is described as a sakinah family, a household filled with tranquility, affection, and blessings. This concept is based on the teachings of the Qur’an, particularly Surah Ar-Rum verse 21, which emphasizes three main pillars: sakinah (tranquility), mawaddah (love), and rahmah (compassion). This article aims to explain the meaning and principles of the sakinah family, its legal foundations in Islamic jurisprudence (fiqh), and the obligations of husbands and wives in creating a harmonious household. It also discusses the importance of mental, spiritual, and economic preparation before marriage as a foundation for building a strong and happy family. The study uses a literature review method by analyzing Islamic literature and relevant legal sources. The findings show that a sakinah family can be achieved when each family member understands their roles, upholds faith, maintains good communication, and bases their relationship on mawaddah wa rahmah. Thus, a sakinah family is not only a place of physical shelter but also a space for nurturing faith, love, and serenity toward happiness in this world and the hereafter
