Abstract

Mental health disorders represent an escalating global crisis, yet conventional psychotherapeutic approaches frequently neglect the spiritual dimension that is fundamental to Muslim populations. Psychotherapy based on Asmā' and Ṣifatullāh —the internalization of Allah's names and attributes within Asmaul Husna— offers a spiritually rich and psychologically relevant therapeutic alternative; however, the psychological mechanisms underlying its effectiveness have not been systematically synthesized. This study aims to identify and synthesize the psychological mechanisms underlying the therapeutic effects of Asmā' and Ṣifatullāh-based psychotherapy on the mental health of Muslim individuals. A systematic literature review was conducted using the CIMO framework (Context–Intervention–Mechanism–Outcome), through a Google Scholar database search covering publications from 2020 to 2026, yielding 12 articles that met the eligibility criteria. The synthesis identified four primary clusters of psychological mechanisms: first, cognitive mechanisms involving attentional redirection and rumination inhibition through repetition of Asmaul Husna; second, neurobiological mechanisms including parasympathetic nervous system activation, cortisol reduction, and amygdala activity suppression; third, emotional mechanisms encompassing emotion regulation, impulse control enhancement, and self-awareness development through muhasabah and muraqabah; and fourth, spiritual mechanisms involving the activation of spiritual coping, meaning-making, and psychological resilience through the internalization of divine attributes. These four mechanisms operate synergistically to form a holistic healing model addressing cognitive, emotional, physiological, and spiritual dimensions simultaneously. These findings carry significant implications for the development of evidence-based Islamic psychotherapy models and provide a practical foundation for counselors and mental health professionals in integrating the spiritual dimension into contemporary therapeutic practice
