This study discusses the crisis of customary institutions and its impact on the fading identity of the Bengkalis community in the context of social change and modernization. The main issue raised is the weakening authority of customary institutions as guardians of local cultural values, and how the crisis affects the cultural identity of the community. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that cause the crisis of customary institutions and examine the process of fading community identity from the perspective of Max Weber's theory of traditional authority. The novelty of this study lies in the Weberian approach used to map the transformation of traditional power legitimacy into modern social structures. This study uses a descriptive qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. The results of the study indicate that the crisis of customary institutions in Bengkalis is caused by four main factors: (1) declining legitimacy of traditional authority, (2) the influence of modernization and social rationalization, (3) marginalization of customary institutions by the formal structure of the state, and (4) intergenerational disconnection from cultural values
