Abstract

The oral microbiome is a dynamic microbial ecosystemthat can be disrupted by antimicrobial exposure, resultingin changes in microbial composition, diversity, andcommunity structure. The capacity of the oral microbiometo withstand environmental disturbances andsubsequently regain ecological stability represents animportant characteristic of microbial resilience and isclosely related to the maintenance of oral microbialhomeostasis. This scoping review aimed to map theavailable evidence regarding oral microbiome responsesfollowing antimicrobial exposure, with particularemphasis on microbial resilience, recovery, andrestoration of homeostasis. Literature was searchedthrough PubMed, ScienceDirect, and Google Scholar usingterms related to oral microbiome, antimicrobial exposure, microbial resilience, and microbial homeostasis. Relevantliterature published within the predefined period wasscreened according to predetermined inclusion andexclusion criteria, followed by data extraction anddescriptive evidence mapping. The findings indicate thatantimicrobial exposure may substantially modify oralmicrobial composition, diversity, community structure, and ecological interactions. Evidence from the includedstudies suggests that oral microbial communities possessvarying degrees of resilience following microbialdisturbance, with recovery influenced by the type andintensity of antimicrobial exposure, characteristics of themicrobial community, and host-related ecological factors. However, the extent and completeness of recovery towardthe pre-exposure state vary across microbialcommunities and exposure conditions. These findingshighlight the importance of understanding oralmicrobiome resilience and recovery as key processes in the restoration and maintenance of oral microbialhomeostasis and provide a basis for further longitudinalresearch on strategies to preserve microbial stabilityfollowing antimicrobial disturbance.
