Abstract

This study examined pesticide-handling practices among smallholder farmers in Kendal Hamlet, Semarang Regency, Central Java, Indonesia, and explored the role of community-based education in promoting pesticide safety. Using a qualitative approach, the study involved 14 Environmental Management undergraduate students and 63 farmers in a three-day live-in service-learning project. Data were collected through community observations, farmer interactions, field notes, community responses, students’ reflection journals, and group discussions. The initial assessment identified unsafe pesticide mixing, inconsistent use of personal protective equipment, and household pesticide storage as key concerns. In response, students developed six posters and six infographics, conducted 63 household visits, organized a farmer meeting and composting demonstration, and delivered a storytelling session for 15 children using pop-up books and flashcards. Community responses indicated initial engagement and awareness of pesticide safety, while students reported gaining practical learning experiences through direct interaction with environmental health issues and community needs. However, the absence of pre- and post-tests, a control group, and long-term follow-up limited the assessment of sustained changes in knowledge and behavior. This initiative supports Sustainable Development Goal 3, particularly Target 3.9, by promoting community-based education to reduce health risks associated with hazardous chemicals.
