Abstract

Adolescents in disaster-affected areas need psychosocial support that is accessible and delivered through trusted local institutions. This community engagement program documented a capacity-building pathway for applying Adventure-Based Counseling (ABC) in Aceh, Indonesia. Local volunteers first took part in a Training of Trainers that combined experiential ABC activities with guided reflection, after which ten university student volunteers facilitated a school-based session for 21 Grade 10 and 11 students at SMAN 1 Samudera, North Aceh. Data consisted of written reflections, field observations, and implementation reports. The preparation dataset comprised 116 reflection entries linked to 89 unique initials-institution combinations from 21 institutional affiliations, and the school dataset comprised 30 activity-level entries from 13 student codes. The reflections were analyzed using qualitative content analysis, and more than one theme could be assigned to each entry. Five recurring themes were identified: collective cooperation; communication and social connection; self-regulation and attention; strategic problem-solving; and confidence, motivation, and persistence. Collective cooperation was the most frequently coded theme in both the preparation entries (67.2%) and the student entries (73.3%). Difficulties during group challenges, such as communication gaps, loss of focus, and ineffective strategies, became material for guided reflection. These results describe what participants wrote about their learning and how the program was implemented; they do not measure change in resilience or trauma symptoms. The program offers a practical pathway that links experiential facilitator preparation, school-based application, and local capacity building, and its continuation should be evaluated through follow-up data.
